IELTS is an English language test for study, migration or work. Over three million people take this test every year. IELTS is accepted by more than 11,000 employers, universities, schools and immigration bodies around the world.

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is designed to help you work, study or migrate to a country where English is the native language. This includes countries such as Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK and USA.

Your ability to listen, read, write and speak in English will be assessed during the test. IELTS is graded on a scale of 1-9. 

IELTS is jointly owned by the British Council; IDP IELTS; and Cambridge University Press & Assessment.

IELTS Points:

  • The overall test time for IELTS is 2 hours and 55 minutes.
  • Listening, Reading and Writing are completed in one sitting.
  • The Speaking test may be taken on the same day or up to seven days before or after the other exams.
  • Each Section is evaluated on the scale of 0-9. The overall IELTS score is the average of these individual sectional scores.
  • The score of the IELTS exam is valid for 2 years.
  • The IELTS exam can be scheduled throughout the year.
  • IELTS score is valid in more than 9000 institutions.
  • There are two types of IELTS: Academic and General Training. IELTS Academic can be taken in a test centre on paper or on computer, and can now also be taken online from home or another private location that has a stable internet connection. IELTS General Training can only be taken in a test centre on paper or on computer.
  • For Academic and General Training, you take the same Listening and Speaking tests but different Reading and Writing tests.
  • If you want to move to an English-speaking country to study, then you should take the IELTS Academic test.
