The GRE (Graduate Record Examination) is a standardized test that is used for graduate school admissions in the United States , Canada and many other countries. It is administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) and is designed to measure verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and analytical writing skills.

GRE- Points

  • GRE is a computer-based examination. No Negative marking.
  • AW section is subjective and always the first. The order of the rest can be either AW – Q1 – V1 – Q2 – V2 or AW – V1 – Q1 – V2 – Q2.
  • GRE is a Sectional Adaptive Test.
  • Total GRE Score is out of 340 (AW Section is scored separately on a scale of 0-6. The total duration of the test will be about 1 Hour 58 minutes.
  • The scores are made available immediately after the exam is over. However, the grades of Analytical writing are available only after a week’s period (approx.)
  • At the end of the test, one can send the scores to 4 universities for free.
  • Validity: GRE scores are valid for five years.
  • Test Dates: Offered year-round, varying by location.
  • GRE can be taken more than once and the best score can be sent for consideration.
  • The application fee for GRE General Test is $228 worldwide, which would roughly translate to Rs.19,000 to Rs.19,500 approximately.

Overview of the Verbal Reasoning Measure

The Verbal Reasoning measure of the GRE General Test assesses your ability to:

  • analyse and evaluate written material and synthesize information obtained from it
  • analyse relationships among component parts of sentences
  • recognize relationships among words and concepts

Verbal Reasoning questions appear in several formats. About half of the measure requires you to read passages and answer questions on those passages.

The other half requires you to read, interpret and complete existing sentences, groups of sentences or paragraphs.

The Verbal Reasoning measure contains three types of questions:

Reading Comprehension, Text Completion and Sentence Equivalence.

Overview of the Quantitative Reasoning Measure

The Quantitative Reasoning measure of the GRE General Task assesses your:

  • basic mathematical skills
  • understanding of elementary mathematical concepts
  • ability to reason quantitatively and to model and solve problems with quantitative methods.

The Quantitative Reasoning section contains four types of questions:

Overview of the Analytical Writing Measure

The Analytical Writing measure of the GRE General Tasks test your critical thinking and analytical writing skills by assessing your ability to:

  • articulate and support complex ideas
  • construct and evaluate arguments
  • sustain a focused and coherent discussion

It doesn’t assess specific content knowledge.

The Issue task presents an opinion on an issue of general interest followed by specific instructions on how to respond to that issue.

You are required to evaluate the issue, consider its complexities, and develop an argument with reasons and examples to support your views.
